Foot Conditions That Can Affect Children
Monday, 14 September 2020 00:00Because children's bodies are continuously growing, when they exercise or partake in sporting activities, they can be more susceptible to developing a foot or ankle injury. In order to help your child maintain the health of their feet, there are a few foot conditions that you may want to familiarize yourself with. Flat feet are typically common among babies and growing children, however if the arch of the foot does not develop over time, you may want to get your child’s feet looked at for assistive orthotics. Sever’s disease is another condition common in young children. This is typically caused by a sporting injury from overuse of the heel bone. Foot or ankle sprains, as well as stress fractures are also common amongst active youngsters. If you are concerned about your child's feet or would like more information about foot conditions that are common among children, please speak with a podiatrist.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy
Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...
Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.
Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.
Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.
As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.
As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.
Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.
Be watchful for any pain or injury.
Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.
Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.
