Happy Feet 101
People seldom pay attention to their feet unless they hurt. Given all that the feet do for us in getting us around, keeping us upright, and providing independence, it would behoove us to give them some loving attention. If we do not do this, the feet are bound to endure problems, ranging from bad odor to painful foot afflictions. Foot care tips to keep the feet happy and healthy include washing, drying, and moisturizing the feet each day, cutting toenails straight across and rounding edges with a nail file, wearing shoes that fit well, checking the feet regularly for abnormalities, and even getting a pampering foot massage and pedicure periodically. If your feet are tired, a good soak and rest will help. If you want to learn more about how to take care of your feet so that they serve you well across your lifetime, make an appointment with a podiatrist who can provide routine foot exams and additional foot care tips.

Everyday Foot Care
Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.
It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

The Basics of a Broken Toe
The majority of broken toes are considered to be minor injuries, despite the pain and discomfort they can cause. A broken toe generally occurs due to a heavy object falling on it, or if it is stubbed on a piece of furniture. The symptoms many people experience can include pain, swelling, bruising, and it is often difficult to walk. The buddy taping method is an effective solution to treat mildly broken toes. This is done by taping the broken toe to the toe next to it, which can give it the stability it needs as it heals. It is beneficial to keep weight off of the affected foot as much as possible, and the swelling may be reduced when the injured toe is frequently elevated. If a bone protrudes from the skin, this type of injury needs immediate medical attention, and surgery may be required to realign the bone. If you have broken your toe, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can offer you treatment options that are correct for you.

What Is a Broken Toe?
A broken toe occurs when one or more of the toe bones of the foot are broken after an injury. Injuries such as stubbing your toe or dropping a heavy object on it may cause a toe fracture.
Symptoms of a Broken Toe
- Swelling
- Pain (with/without wearing shoes)
- Stiffness
- Nail Injury
Although the injured toe should be monitored daily, it is especially important to have a podiatrist look at your toe if you have severe symptoms. Some of these symptoms include worsening or new pain that is not relieved with medication, sores, redness, or open wounds near the toe.

Common Causes of Toenails
The big toe is generally affected when an ingrown toenail develops. An ingrown toenail happens when the nail grows into the side of the skin instead of over it. Common reasons for it to develop can consist of wearing shoes that are too tight, or it may happen if it is prevalent in family history. It may also occur from improperly trimming the toenails or if a foot injury has happened. The symptoms that are associated with an ingrown toenail can include redness and swelling, and it may become infected if medical attention is not sought. People who have diabetes have a higher risk of developing an infection from an ingrown toenail. If you would like additional methods of effectively preventing ingrown toenails, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist who can provide you with useful information.
Ingrown toenails can become painful if they are not treated properly. For more information about ingrown toenails, contact Dr. Lee R. Stein of Lake Shore Foot & Ankle, PC. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Ingrown Toenails
Ingrown toenails occur when a toenail grows sideways into the bed of the nail, causing pain, swelling, and possibly infection.
Causes
- Bacterial infections
- Improper nail cutting such as cutting it too short or not straight across
- Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing, which causes the nail to grow back irregularly
- Ill-fitting shoes that bunch the toes too close together
- Genetic predisposition
Prevention
Because ingrown toenails are not something found outside of shoe-wearing cultures, going barefoot as often as possible will decrease the likeliness of developing ingrown toenails. Wearing proper fitting shoes and using proper cutting techniques will also help decrease your risk of developing ingrown toenails.
Treatment
Ingrown toenails are a very treatable foot condition. In minor cases, soaking the affected area in salt or antibacterial soaps will not only help with the ingrown nail itself, but also help prevent any infections from occurring. In more severe cases, surgery is an option. In either case, speaking to your podiatrist about this condition will help you get a better understanding of specific treatment options that are right for you.

Swollen Ankles
For anyone who has suffered from swollen ankles, you know how uncomfortable this can be. Such swelling can make it hard to walk, and the skin on the ankle may feel tight and stretched. Swelling of the ankles can result from a variety of things including injury, like a broken leg or sprained ankle, inflammation, and fluid retention. Ankles are a common lower extremity to experience swelling because of the accumulation of fluids in the body and gravity. Those more likely to experience swelling in their ankles include seniors, those who are overweight, and those who spend a prolonged time on their feet or in hot weather. Pregnant women are another group of people who are prone to ankle swelling because of their natural fluid retention, pressure on veins from the extra weight they are carrying, and a fluctuation of hormones. Swollen ankles are typically temporary, and resting and elevating the feet can resolve the problem. However, if the swelling is from an underlying health condition, like diabetes, a blood clot, heart failure, or even a problem with high blood pressure during pregnancy, it can be a more serious situation requiring immediate medical care. If you are experiencing swelling in your ankles and it is causing you persistent or worsening pain, or if you have other symptoms, it is strongly suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist to understand what is underlying the swelling and obtain treatment.
Ankle pain can be caused by a number of problems and may be potentially serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with Dr. Lee R. Stein from Lake Shore Foot & Ankle, PC. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.
Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.
Causes
The most common causes of ankle pain include:
- Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
- Ankle sprains
- Broken ankles
- Achilles tendinitis
- Achilles tendon rupture
- Stress fractures
- Bursitis
- Tarsal tunnel syndrome
- Plantar fasciitis
Symptoms
Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.
Diagnosis
Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.
Treatment
Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.
